A short guide to muhurtam jewellery for a Kerala wedding

What pieces a Kerala bride traditionally wears at muhurtam — the order, the meaning, the mistakes to avoid.

A complete Kerala bridal set — the pieces worn at the muhurtam
മുഹൂർത്തം

The muhurtam is the precisely-timed moment of the wedding — calculated to the minute by the family astrologer — when the groom ties the Cheruthali around the bride's neck and the marriage is complete. Everything that happens at the muhurtam is loaded with meaning. The pieces the bride wears at that moment are the ones she will remember, and her family will photograph, for the rest of her life.

What pieces are typically worn. At muhurtam, a Kerala bride wears the following pieces, layered from the throat downward:

The Kasumala, closest to the throat — the Lakshmi-coin garland that anchors the bridal layer.

The Palakka Mala, below the Kasumala — the Pala-seed leaf garland with coloured stones.

The Manga Mala, below the Palakka — the mango-shaped stone-set garland.

A central pendant — often a Lakshmi pendant, a Nagapadam Thali, or a heavy Poothali — at the lowest point of the chest.

The Oddyanam — the ceremonial waist belt — wrapped over the kasavu at the natural waistline.

The bridal Jhimkis — heavy ear ornaments, sometimes connected to a chain (mattil) that runs from the ear to the hair bun.

Bangles — typically a stack of plain gold Kappu bangles on each wrist.

And finally, separately and only at the moment of the muhurtam: the Cheruthali — the small thali — strung on a yellow thread, which the groom himself ties around the bride's neck.

The role of the Cheruthali. The Cheruthali is the only piece a Kerala bride wears for the rest of her married life. It is the most sacred piece of gold in the entire wedding. Most communities have a specific Cheruthali form — the Nair cheruthali is most often a small leaf-shape, the Brahmin minukku thali a smooth oval, and the Syrian Christian minnu carries a cross within a heart. Confirm your community's specific form with your family elder before the wedding.

The ordering — what is placed first. Tradition places the heavier pieces first. The bride is dressed in the kasavu mundu and the upper veshti, and then the karigar or family elder begins layering — Kasumala first, then the Palakka, then the Manga, then the central pendant, then the Oddyanam, then the Jhimkis. The Cheruthali is held back, on its yellow thread, for the moment of the tying.

Common mistakes families make. The most frequent mistake is layering pieces in the wrong order — placing the Palakka above the Kasumala, for example, so the green stones sit awkwardly above the goldcoins. The second is forgetting to bring the muhurtam-day kasavu to the shop two days before the wedding for a piece-by-piece fitting. The third is rushing the Cheruthali thread tie at the moment of muhurtam — the yellow thread must be long enough to tie a comfortable knot.

Bring the bride into the shop near Stadium Bus Stand two days before the muhurtam. We will lay the pieces out in order, fit each one for comfort, and ensure the Cheruthali thread is the right length. The fitting takes about an hour. Tea will be served.
